Between 1890 and 2012, living standards rose by a factor of 9 in France, 11 in the United States, 6 in the United Kingdom and 23 in Japan. The catch-up of the United States by the euro area’s three largest countries was interrupted over 1995-2013 as US total factor productivity surged on the back of advances in information and communication technologies.
